A little bit of background information about me : I'm an atheist

I challenge you ! We dont have to prove that God exists, He's already done that through creation, showing us that He is. If you really want to know the truth please read Romans. 2:18-20 then you decide weather He does or not! ...Genaveve

Our Life meaning is to love God and to love each other and God exists because you live and the only way it is possible for you to breathe is through his breathe of life that he breathes through you each day that causes your heart to beat every minute with God you will die and would not be able to breathe no matter what one could do in a hospital or any where your life depends upon God whether you believe it or not. And If you die then your soul goes back to him and there is no games in what I say. God orders life and everything lives and breathes through him and by him.I hope this answer your question.

Doesn't answer my question at all, and, just fyi there is no god because there is no proof of him.
I'd like to see a god TRY and take away my breath and beating heart.
Are you saying the meaning of life is only to love god? Then why did he create us? Just to have a couple billion friends that love him?

U would like for God to take away your breath and beating heart? First of all he doesnt take life, he gives it and do u think u will live forever?
Well, (to the commenter above):
God isn't real. He doesnt do anything. No i won't live for ever, its not possible to do that. I won't die because a god is making me. I'll die because my body doesn't work properly, heart failure maybe? Cancer? Who knows. Hopefully not until awhile.

If u dont believe in God there really is no meaning of life is there? How do we exist if no one created us? Answer that one.

Thanks for asking this question. It has produced some of the best testimonials that God truly does exist. And yes if want to know the meaning of life, look at God in the flesh, Jesus Christ who was and is. Never invisible

You are sooo right.
"Life" as we know it is based upon the consumption and then the reproduction of basic organizational units. We manifest this more complexly as "large" organisms. The principal, however, is the same: Our existence can be described most basically through the observation of our formation, composition, and reproduction. See "The Selfish Gene." Developments in cultural studies have provided us with the concept of a cultural or informational unit analogous to a gene which is most commonly referred to as a "meme." The gene, and the species composed by them, can be understood as existing and perpetuating themselves for the sake of perpetuation--they/we are "programmed" to perpetuate; the analogy of the "meme" describes the same impulse inherent in our linguistic and cultural artifacts--think of the jingle, for instance.
What is the meaning of life? Meaning is a justification of an existing fact. We can justify in any way we desire or find convenient; what we should all admit, though, is the *point* of life--living, and guaranteeing the "selfish" perpetuation of (specific) life. Meaning is herein not *unimportant*, it is, rather, the most important component for us because it is the most subjective, and therefore that which we can change and control. Meaning is the cause of argument, confrontation, the struggles which have defined and torn societies asunder. It is an abstraction--"real" only because we have this need to explain or justify what we already know to be the truth: We live because we are meant to live, and meant to continue trying to live. A biological imperative. "Meaning" is our attempt as a society to both justify this fact, and to deny its baseness.

There are many answers here that I don't agree with, but I'll take the time to respond to the one I find most ignorant before answering your question:

I could just as easily pull out a quote from the Koran, and ask you the same question, except over the existence of Allah. Your Bible verses don't prove the existence of your god any more so than a quote out of the Koran proves the existence of Allah.
But onto your question.
I myself am an atheist; contrary to some of the other answers, I find reason to live my life on Earth without god at all. In fact, I've learned to enjoy my life much more now that I don't believe in a deity.
I'm always amused by Francis Crick's answer was when he was asked the same question in the interview: "Well, I was looking forward to a good lunch."
I'm also looking forward to a good lunch at this moment. I'm also looking forward to graduating, and pursing advanced education in my high school. I'm also looking forward to finishing a great book I've been reading. More importantly, I find reason in caring for my animals (many of whom my family adopted from the pound) and taking part in community service programs in my area to help the less fortunate. I look forward to seeing my friends later tonight, and many days down the road. I want to live another day to learn more about the fascinating world that surrounds me, and the universe that houses us.
I find reason in the goal to one day attend medical school, and help others. I find reason through a lot of things, many of which would bore you if I listed.
I find the meaning of life in the simple things, as well as the goals down the road. I find reason in life -- the short time I have on this Earth. I'm not going to waste my days (and my Sundays in particular) ensuring my safe passage into an afterlife that has absolutely no supporting evidence. I find reason in the short time I have here on this magnificent planet, hoping to help the less fortunate that surround me every day.

If you require proof that God exists before believing, your agnostic. Secondly, the meaning of life is whatever you make it. Everyone within a certain extent has control over their own lives. Make the best of it!

Atheist means 'not a theist'. A theist a one who believes in god. An agnostic does not 'believe in god' and is therefore technically an atheist.
You know Greentree, you offered a parenthethical to your initial two questions, right? Yet you commented on a couple of answers with the same "religious" slant that you asked responders not to engage! I think that would tell you something about the impossibility of answering the "meaning of life" question without a "religious" response! without a Creator there is no reason for our existence. May i suggest then that what you are truly asking is "Since I don't believe in God, what is the meaning of my life or why am i here?" my answer to that would have to be that anything - everything - you could possibly think of as a reason of the meaning of your life adds up to less than what it must be. Your question has been the subject of every theologian in history and has covered thousands upon thousands of pages. And their unified, albeit simplified, answer is that we are here of the necessity of God's Holy nature. And of course that begs numerous questions, right?!! And the answers to those "numerous questions" come full circle back to that essential reason. As an atheist, are you able or willing to set aside all your preconceived ideas about God or no God for one moment and allow yourself one simple objective question? Whether you believe in Him or not, why not jsut ask Him if He's there? And i know, you've probably done that before. But do it sincerely this time. No doubts, no crossed arms. Just from your heart. If you should decide to do that, be fair to yourself and be patient with Him for His answer. I mean, He's more than patient with all of us!! And it can't hurt. If you still don't believe, well, that's still your choice.

Well, i kind of don't even know how to respond to this. I was mostly trying to find out what atheists (or, people who think logically) had to say about the meaning of life. I KNOW there's no "meaning" of life so Im playing a little game of "devils advocate". To me the meaning of life is anything you want it to be, in simple terms. I would not involve god in this at all, even if he did exist. I don't understand how "being created" is the meaning of life.... It doesnt really give specifics at all
For me its all about being HAPPY.. We all have our own definition of it.. Whats happiness for me might not be happiness for you.. Just like religion.. =P

Well, if you think ants and termites have a major purpose in this planet, then there's gotta be a major meaning behind our existence as well.
But, if you think ants exist just because they do, then we too exist just because we do. There really is no major goal for humanity to reach. We've been around for quite a while now, and things have remained relatively the same... So I think we must be here because we are, and there is no true purpose besides simply enjoying life. N_n

Basically, everywhere. It's impossible to "create" things out of no-where. Therefore, if a god did exist, he didn't create the earth, or us. No one can reverse gravity to cross the dead sea. Basically everything in the bible is a lie.
And, the onus is on you to prove why he exists.
It's very difficult to prove something doesn't exist when he's invisible, is seen only when he wants to be, has no volume or mass, is a shape shifter, and no one has ever seen or felt or smelled or heard him.

Ahhh... Yet, somehow, even though its impossible for things to be created... Here we are.
Who do you believe Jesus was? How many human beings, atheists, buddhist, hindus, alike gave testimony of the miracles he performed. The fact that your body functions is a miracle, that is God showing himself.
You say he's only seen when he wants to be, but i think he's only seen when we want to see him.
If you don't believe we were created... How do you think we got here?

Greentree will never answer how we got here. Ive asked several times with no response. Think she may believe and just likes to start trouble cuz she slipped up and said God only shows himself when he wants to.
We are created to serve first God then others. Also to bring others to Him throught Christ. There is a God shaped void in each of us. Some people try to fill it with money, success, alcohol, drugs, promiscuous sex, gambling, etc. These things can bring temporary happiness. There is nothing wrong with money or success. But it is only when we fill the void with God can we experience true joy. There is a difference between happiness and joy. Happiness is an emotion. Joy is a state of being. Complete joy only comes from from knowing and serving God through Christ. Only through Him can we experience joy even through the deepest darkest times of our lives. I am speaking from experience and from others testimonies concerning this subject. In fact my pastor was an atheist prior to giving his life to Christ. I know you didn't want a religious answer. But somehow I feel that God wanted you to hear this. He patiently waits for us to respond to Him. He loves each of us and desires a relationship with us. What have you got to lose? With Him you have everything to gain. Think about it. Does this help? If you feel uncomfortable at all it could be conviction from God. This is because He loves you. All Christians at some point have experienced conviction from God. This is how He prods us and brings us to feel the need for confessing our sins and living for Him. He loves us and wants the best for us. That can only come from Him.

The purpose of life is to have a relationship with our Creator God. Yes, I went there. But it is the truth. He did not need to create us, as He is completely self-sufficient, but He wanted to. He wanted fellowship with us. AWe are the ones who mess that up, not Him. And that starts with denying He even exists. How can you have a relationship with someone you do not even believe is real?
