Columbus didn't want to discover America. He was an explorer and wanted to discover new lands and areas. He discovered America by chance.

He wanted to find a shortcut to the far east. Through an error in calculating the circumference of the earth, and making Asia too long, he figured the Japan was located were he stumbled across the Caribbean Islands. It was just dumb luck. He thought the Caribbean was the Indies (aka Spice Islands, now modern Indonesia). That's why native Americans were called Indians. The Caribbean was called the West Indies, while Indonesia was the East Indies, even though they are half a planet away from each other. To his dying day Columbus thought China was just a few hundred miles west of the Americas.
