Antibiotics are generally taken for ailments or diseases which are caused due to bacterial infectivity, not viral ones. Ailments like the common cold as well as the flu are caused due to viruses; hence antibiotics cannot be prescribed for these kinds of ailments. The reason for this is mainly that antibiotics do not function against eliminating viruses. However, when used in a small quantity, antibiotics are potent weapons to cure bacterial diseases. Usage in a small amount signifies that antibiotics can be consumed solely for bacterial infections which have been diagnosed by a professional and by taking the exact directions as per the prescription given.

Antibiotics are usually safe and should be only taken as prescribed by one's doctor, however they may hamper with the working of other medications which you are on already.
