How Do You Handle Failing Memory That Comes With Ageing?

I've always had a strange memory. I blamed it on convulsions that I suffered as a child. As I'm aging, I find my memory really lagging. I don't like taking part in group activities, even going to church because I can't remember what happened the week before. I find it embarrassing when people want to resume a conversation from the previous week and I have no recollection of ever talking to them. It doesn't help when people say "Oh we all have those problems (memory)" They don't really understand what I'm going through.

The common cause of memory loss is aging and everyone do loss memory capabilities with time. You can't stop it but you can take positive measures to slow it down by eating healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish and other protein sources. You should also take regular exercise. If not possible then you should take walk. Your mind also needs exercise and you can do it by reading, using deductive reasoning and learn new skills etc.

Zuhail gave a great answer. I agree. I also think there is no harm in seeing a neurologist to answer your nagging doubt about your convulsions as a child.  He/she may have some great ideas for you to develop your memory and slow down the rate of change as you are experiencing it.

        Dear pussekat,
I have found that as I have become...a little older (chronologically), I have been able to give my memory a good boost by challenging my mind  working crossword puzzles, cryptograms, or any type of puzzles that give the mind a good "work out". At first I didn't like it and thought it was stupid because I was not very good at it! But I purchased  a good dictionary and crossword thesaurus. I not only enjoy it, but I have increased my vocabulary and knowledge of interesting words and subjects I did not know about or did not understand! Also by reading and participating in online information. Also, I have aided in the health of my "gray matter" by subscribing to free online classes such as "www.allpoetry.com". This not only allows you to read other writers' poetry and stories (beginners and long-time pros), but the free online classes has been a great source and joy of learning how to write my own and, if I want, I can share mine, as I learn, and they professionally critique them.  I recently read (online) that too many people, now days, have fallen into a life of "too easy". We rely own too much on having things done for us and miss the satisfaction of the accomplishment and the learning for ourselves. I agree and I plead guilty to that myself! Instead of getting hiring someone to mend a broken "whatever", check out a book, or buy one on the subject and learn to do it yourself. If you want to learn how to do excel, buy, or check out a book with a cd included and learn to do it yourself. Thus, not only will you get the satisfaction of learning and doing it yourself, but it exercises your memory and your ability to make decisions. AND, you will feel more comfortable in activities and participating in conversations!  Also, I've learned to listen more and talk less unless I do want to contribute.  If I don't want to contribute, or I don't have something to share because I know bubkes about the conversation, I'm all right with that. That way I can enjoy just being with the company of friends because I'm not worrying about having the right thing to say or have the right answer. That's what it's all about! Enjoying each other's company!  And, I bet you have helped others by being a listening ear for them or helped someone in need. That's what people will remember. Not how much you know about national debt, or how Donald Trump got to be real estate tycoon.  I was the same way and now I'm much less critical of myself than before. It took time and practice, but I'm finally enjoying life better not  worrying and comparing myself to others or worrying what they think. And I like working crossword puzzles and writing children's' stories!  I do agree that if you are still concerned about your memory and your health, that you seek the help of a specialist, to rule out any physical problems!  Especially for your peace of mind! And that's what we all need, isn't it?  Peace of mind! And peace in spirit!!  God bless you!

Check with your doctor about any medications you're taking - some of them affect memory.  My companion has the same problem and her medications are a definite factor.

I hope that you have discussed this with your Dr.  There is medicines to help you with memory loss.  Depending on your age of course - it would be a good idea to keep a journal.  Sometimes by writing things down a few times and looking at them you may recall more about certain situations.  We all do have some level of memory loss as we age but if it is that serious then you really should talk to your Dr.  Try talking to people about the present and or future rather than the past.
