The wire that is coming out of your ceiling I am assuming is part of your house wiring when I answer this. Is the power source you are hooking this fan up to on a two way switch? (e.g) is there more than one light switch that turns this light or fan on and off) Most of the time Red and black wires are hot wires while white and green are your commons or grounds. If you have the receipt for your fan I would try to hook the red wire to a black wire on your fan. The worst that can happen is the fan will short the circuit breaker will trip and you go back to the store to get another fan. I hope it works.

First off check the forward and reverse switch on the fan,new ones are usually stuck in the middle. If not then You probably have two switches on your wall for the fan, one for light and one for fan.So follow me.

If you have white, black, red, and green coming out the ceiling and black blue white and copper, coming out of the fan then :white to white black to blue red to black gr to gr.

If you only have black white and gr coming out of the fan then you only need one hot lead red or black,so pick one and just put a wire nut on the unused lead and stuff it back in the box.
