How Can I Improve My Chances Of Getting Into A UK University?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

UK Universities are seeking students that meet their basic requirements (usually a UCAS points tariff).  For this, you will need to gain a number of qualifications, A-Levels, AS-Levels or NVQs.  Some mature applicants will be able to gain entry on the basis of interview alone, whilst some institutions insist that mature candidates take a one year access course.

Obviously one of your teachers will write a reference for your UCAS form, it's best if that teacher knows something about you and your subject and non-specific references tend to read poorly.  Your personal statement should take some considerable effort, sell yourself, if you are going to menton any shortcomings, provide some possible solutions, not excuses.

If you are successful in gaining an interview, dress for the occasion, do MORE than they ask you to prepare, that never hurts.  Make good eye contact with the interviewer and be confident but honest with your answers.  Don't be cheesy, flippant or 'clever', explain why you feel you would benefit from the course and what you would bring to the department.  If possible think through the type of questions that they are likely to ask you and muse over some possible answers.  Remember, you can't control their decision, you can only do what you can to influence that decision.
