How Do You Find The North And South Of A Magnet?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

One end of the compass needle is usually marked by a dab of red paint to denote north or south, depending on the manufacturer. One way to be sure is to go outside at noon and see where the sun is. If you are in the northern hemisphere, the sun will be shining from the south of you. Just take out the compass and make sure there is no metal nearby and see which end of the needle points towards the sun and note it as "south". So, the other end must be "north".
Of course, the compass does not point to True North, only Magnetic North, which varies depending on where in the world you are. But it is close enough for general navigational purposes.
