Is The Monster "Polypheme" Real?

Answer Question

What, the one-eyed offspring of the Sea God Poseidon and his concubine Thoosa? Er, I don't think so.

There aren't many genuine one-eyed creatures, normally created as such.  Okay, let me amend that.  I can't think of any.  Even flat- bottom-dwelling fish have 2 eyes on top.  All animals  if they have eyes get at least two (barring birth defects, including a type appropriately named cyclopia).  Having two-eyes promotes binocular vision, to let a creature judge the distance away an object is.  When eyes are widely spaced, like the eyes on each side of a horse's head can't look at the same object simultaneously, they allow instead to see more area at once, an advantage for a prey species.

Polypheme is the French translation of what is usually called in English "Polyphemus" -- better known as "The Cyclops" to most English speakers.

It may be that Mammoth skulls were the origin of the Cyclops myth, their one large hole for the trunk to attach to may have been mis-interpreted as a giant eye socket, by primitive man.

A very sad and disturbing picture of a one-eyed kitten born without a nose.  As close to a real cyclops as any of us ever want to get.
