A museum is a building in which antiquities are kept for show. It is a preservatory of relics of all ages ancient, mediaeval and contemporary. Such buildings are generally maintained at government expense. There we see carefully preserved objects illustrating the history of art, of rare beauty or the latest inventions of science. The arrangements of these specimens are made in such a way that a full and connected history of society can be constructed.
In Pakistan too we have some large museums. The museum at Lahore is perhaps the biggest. It is housed in a huge building on the mall. It contains many relics of pre historic animals and fossils, many coins of historical interest and also specimens of ancient Indian sculpture.
The uses of museums are many. They are a great source of popular education. They are interesting to the experts. They tell us about the past the great monuments of art, and the progress of science in modern times. They connect the past with the present ; they reflect the present and foreshadow the future. They provide wide visual instruction to the students help them trace the evaluation of man through the ages. They help in restoring the link between the written and unwritten history.
