Where Is The Grass Always Greener, According To The Proverb?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It seems the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Like most proverbs, this one can be taken literally. If you look at anything, such as a patch of grass, from a distance, it really does tend to look better than the same thing seen close up, because its flaws and lacks are invisible (weeds in the grass, for instance.) Likewise, if you go picking something like blackberries, it is amazing how thick and juicy the ones on the next bush look, and how sparse they seem when you reach them.

Applied to everyday life, this proverb can help to explain why so many relationships break up, or why people leave one job to take another one which they find is no better. What you haven't got just does look better than what you have. There is another saying "distance lends enchantment" which has the same meaning.
