Where Can I Get A List For Unclaimed Money Or Property?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are many places where you can find unclaimed money or property. There are many web sites which give you the free or paid service of looking for money or property which is under your name and not being claimed by you. You can also check your city library's microfiche records. You can also call up or visit your state controller's office and submit your personal details to them. The state will look for it and contact you in a couple of days or they might provide you with the information on the phone itself. Once your name has been found, you can give some identity proof and you are free to claim that particular property or money. Sometimes it happens that your relatives might leave something for you in their will and you might not be aware of it. The state does its best to look for the person responsible for the property. The property and the money remain with the state for that period of time.

I am not certain the last comment about "The state does its best to look for the person responsible for the property" is accurate.

With today's technology, you would think it would be easy for our government to track us down. Truth is, most states have ONLY two requirements:

      1. Contact the last known address
      2. If last known address does not respond, they must place a classified ad in the persons local newspaper.

If no one responds to either of these steps, the money simply sits in the unclaimed property office until the owner or their surviving relatives come to claim it.
