Do You Believe In This Philosophy?

It's not what you know, it's WHO you know!

Answer Question

I absolutely believe this is what matters in politics and the business world. Throughout my working career I observed this principle be used frequently. Here on blurtit there are many who curry favor with the moderators with their sycophant-type sucking up with the ultimate goal to bend the rules and be able to get away with it.

Of course, people that don't know you only respect you if the people you both share in common respect and like you.-Trey

Yes, to a large degree it's true.  Nothing gets done in leadership without those who are compelled to follow through a belief in the person and the relationship that has been established.  Human beings are about relationships, and many competent potential leaders fail by lack of their ability to connect to others.

Would you say this philosphy is good? If someone knows the right people in business and use this method to climb the ladder to the top but they don't know much about how to "work" the business, they've cheated others, don't you think?

If you mean by good--as in whether or not effective, I do not believe people "succeed" in life long term "using"relationships as a substitute for other competence overall. As in most things in life, I believe a balance of competencies and the wisdom to use them judiciously leads to the best outcomes overall/for all in the longer term.

Knowing the right people is just a tool to open doors. A person with ambition (not a bad word!) will try to cultivate that. These days, we call it net-working. What you do after getting in depends on your other tools: Technical knowledge, people skills, ethics...etc. You succeed or fail accordingly. (to be continued below...)

I think it's true only a portion of the time.  Nepotism is a good point when considering who you know.

Sometimes it DOES help WHO you know, right? I've been in a few situations when I needed help and I just happened to know the right people to assist me.

I wish it were not the case but it is in most circumstances, even in my beloved church. We have seven thousand members but maybe two hundred who do all the work.  However when it comes time to vote for Vestry members (That's the ruling body that makes important decisions) it is the ones with the "right" social connections and the "money" that get elected.

You expressed no opinion, you answered the question as presented so why would someone give you a three-star rating? You got 5 from me.

I don't think of it as a philosophy as much as a reflection on how we live our lives.
This truism will not apply to Robinson Crusoe; but as long as we live in a society, the ability to deal with other people (by hook or by crook in this instance) takes on more importance than the mere possession of knowledge. This is not necessarily a bad thing, if it benefits others in the end.
