Pakistan got in inheritance a mixture of Mughal and British colonial architectural forms. Mughal builders combined the Muslim fondness for large domes, slender towers, and archways with the Hindu style of red sandstone, white marble, and inlaid jewels. Mughal artists adorned the monuments with verses from the Holy Quran. Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort, built between the 1580s and 1670s, present the best example of this architecture. The mosque, which is the second largest mosque in the world, has a courtyard which can accommodate 100,000 worshipers. The world's largest mosque too is in Pakistan.

Faisal Mosque in Islāmābād was built in the 1980s. It was funded by Saudi Arabia and and designed by a Turkish architect. The mosque is named for the late Saudi monarch King Faisal. There are numerous other buildings built in the Mughal era and have survived the ravages of time. Some of them are Shalimar Gardens in Lahore; the Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta. Among buildings built during British rule are the Lahore Railway Station and the Lahore High Court.
