Normally it is 40 hours a week but it also depends upon your contract on which you are working. There are no special laws in many countries for it but some countries do have laws. I am not sure where you live?

I am a manager at a papermill.  My salary is based on 44 hours per week.  I am considered non-exempt, so I do not get compensation for hours worked in the excess of 44 hours.   Basically, if I can do my job within 44 hours successfully, so be it.  If I can't and require more time per week, so be it.  The contract is, to manage and to provide the service they are paying you for.

The trick used is; they schedule us on weekend duty.  Meaning we must respond if there is a need during the weekend.   Another trick is, that they have a regular scheduled meeting on Sat. & Sun. Morning.  So, basically they force you to be on the job.

If this is worth it?  That is the question we all have to ask ourselves.  Technically, we don't make decent money per hour; but the overall yearly wage is liveable and comfortable.  You have to look at your priorities.  Supporting your family at your expense. (your time and life!)

My husband works approximately 72+ hours a week. He tries to take a day off, but the call him in. The only day off he has is Sunday. Sometimes he has to work then too. Is there some type of law that prohibits him form working so many hours. His employers really don't care. I think they would like to get rid of him, but He is the only person in that department and he has been there the longest. 30 years. He is in the newspaper business and his pay is salary.
