My Ancestors Were Said To Be Black Irish. What Does This Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The term Black Irish is not a commonly known within Ireland. It is believed to be of Ameriacan origin.

The Black Irish are taken to be those with dark hair, dark eyes and a darker complexion than the rest of the population.

The classic description of the Irish tends to be black , red or dark hair, place skin and blue eyes. The red hair is said to originate with the Scandinavian settlement  of Ireland and the coming of the Vikings, but their must have been red haired individuals in Ireland before that time.

It is said that the black Irish are the desendants of survivors of the wreck of the Spanish Armarda. This is unlikely to have much basis in fact as so few men survived the incident and there is little evidence for their settlement in Ireland.
It is also thought that the Black Irish are of Iberian/ Spanish origins.
