What Year Was The Radio Invented?

Answer Question

Michael Faraday, a physicist from England proved that electric current produces magnetic field. That was in the early 19th century. In 1864, James Maxwell a professor from the University of Cambridge proved that electromagnetic energy can travel like waves at the speed of light. Heinrich Hertz in the year 1888 claimed and proved that Maxwell's theory holds good only for a shorter distance. Guglielmo Marconi, who was a physicist from Italy, in the year 1901, developed a radio system and could transmit Morse code over the Atlantic.

In 1906, Lee De Forest an American physicist invented the vacuum tube. The vacuum tube amplified weaker radio signals transmitted over longer distances. The vacuum tube was also used to generate radio signals and it became an important component of the radio transmitter.

Marconi won patents for the radio and made it a commercial hit. Commercial success plays an important role to multiply the use and applications of a technology.

During the years claims were made that as a matter of fact not Marconi invented radio but Sir Oliver Lodge, Alexander Popov, Nikola Tesla , had sent wireless messages before Marconi got his patent. Marconi won the Noble Prize in physics in 1909.

It is till date not known who invented the first radio but it is said in the year 1894 Alexander Stepanovich Popov built the first radio receiver. Initially, radio machinery was called "wireless telegraphy" later abbreviated to "Wireless".

In the year 1893 at St. Louis Missouri, Nikola Tesla use to research and make devices for his experiments with electricity. During one of his lectures in Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and at the National Electric Light Association, he explained and demonstrated in detail the ideology of his work. The explanation contained all the fundamentals that were later on included into radio systems before the vacuum tube was invented.

In the beginning most of his experiments were based on magnetic receivers. Nikola is said to be the first person to apply mechanism of electrical conduction to wireless practices.
