Where Does The Creator Of Linux Come From?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The creator of Linux is Linus Torvalds. He hails from Helsinki, Finland, where he was born on 28 December 1969. His parents are Nils and Anna Torvalds. Though he was born in Finland, his mother tongue is Swedish, not Finnish, the official language of Finland.

Linus studied in the University of Helsinki, where he enrolled for the Computer Science program in the year 1988. At the University, he started working on developing the Linux system as an enhancement to Minix, a student-teaching application that had been created by Andrew Tannebaum, and drew inspiration from the Unix OS. Linux was created from there, and is a free OS that is like Unix. He started with developing a terminal emulation program that would be robust, and went on to create Linux as per the GNU General Public License. He created the whole of Linux using inputs from other programmers from around the world. Currently, the source code for Linux is available to people from all over the world. Of late, Linux has been gaining rapid acceptance in even corporate environments.

Another piece of trivia - Linus was keen on naming his program Freax initially! The first version of Linux was unleashed to the world in September 1991, version 0.01.
