James Cagney suffered much ill-health towards the end of this his life. His final film appearance was in the film "Ragtime" in 1981, a part designed to aid his recovery
This final film came 20 years after his previous film appearance. In that time, he refused all offers in favour of spending the time learning how to paint.
He also made a television appearance in 1984 in a show called Terrible Joe Moran, another role that was designed to aid his convalescence, but his health didn't improve and he died in 1986 from a heart attack whilst ill with diabetes. He was 86.
