Altogether there were five seasons of this ITV show, spanning the period from 1979 to 1992. The first three seasons were the most successful. These charted the story of a lazy, cynical academic, James Shelley (Hywell Bennett.) Despite his PhD Shelley usually manages to avoid the workplace, and when he does start a job he never keeps it long. In seasons 1-3 he has a girlfriend, Fran (Belinda Sinclair) and they marry and have a child. Howver, by the end he has been left by Fran and decided to go to America. In the 1980s "The Return of Shelley" saw him getting to grips with Yuppie culture (a couple of snooty flatmates replacing his old landlady Mrs H.) In the 90s a third series was made, using the original title of "Shelley"; this time James was living among elderly people. However, the later Shelley never quite captured audiences in the same way.
