Black Cohosh, or to give it its full title, Cimicifuga racemosa, is a herbaceous perennial which is native to the US.
It is widely associated with being used by women during the menopause as a means of using a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy.
However, it is very usueful to women of all ages. It can help with premenstrual tension and menstrual pains.
At other times of the month it can be a good adaptogen which means that it helps the body adapt to stress and can help to balance hormones and moods !
It is also thought ot help alleviate feelings of depression, anxiety, general tension and feelings of panic or worry.
It should not be taken by pregnant women, due to the affect which it has on hormone levels, but otherwise it is reputedly safe to use for other women.
