Do You Think O'Bama Will Come Up With A Health Plan We Can All Live With?

Answer Question

23 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

On present showing, I would say not.

I was so glad to come to USA, partly because it would get me away from socialized medicine.  However, it looks like it could be about to follow me here.

Many people in Britain believe that medical treatment should be free at the point of delivery, which means it basically has to be run by the government and paid for with taxes.  This is not the American way, though.  Americans rather seem to want access to affordable and effective private health insurance with some kind of safety net for insurance to be made available to those who would not ordinarily be able to afford it, coupled with elimination of waste, fraud and general runaway costs, plus sufficient doctors, nurses, clinics and hospitals to service the whole population.

Having experienced government run services of all kinds in Britain, I have to say that, even though you pay for them through your taxes, your status changes subtly in a government run service from a client or customer to a charity case.  In other words, you no longer receive the service as of right because you have, or are, paying for it, but because the people running the service decide that, firstly, you qualify to receive it and, secondly, that they can afford it, and thirdly, that it is now your turn to receive.  Money is not well ring-fenced in England, and it is not uncommon for taxes to be spent on totally different things to what the taxpayers were being charged for.  Then when they need those services, the money has run out.  Someone who is healthy like myself, can pay lifelong into the National Health service, receive little to nothing from it because we are in good health most of our lives, and then in the last two to five years of our lives, when we need the treatments, be told that we are not worth treating because of our age.  That is totally dishonest.  Our taxes fund other people's care and then we are denied care when we need it!  The latest is that, rather than be treated, a sick and seriously incapacitated elderly person, with the consent of their family, of course, may be drugged up to the eyeballs to deaden their agonies and then totally deprived of food and fluid, so that they die, instead of being given medical treatment.  Guess what they call it?  TLC, tender, loving care.  It is nothing more nor less than legalized murder.

Elderly people who break bones or have hip operations etc do not receive physiotherapy in the way they do here.  They are just given a list of exercises to do at home, with the result it is practically impossible for them to get properly mobile again.

I could go on and on.  But I won't.

I had no idea! Thanks for informing us. What is more terrifying to the aging population than realizing they will be treated as a non- person, when no longer able to fend for themselves. I don't think things are very good for the elderly in this country either; unless they are wealthy! Perhaps we should move to Japan or similar country, where the elderly are honored and respected for their wisdom.

The "Christian" West needs to return to the fifth commandment: "Honour your father and mother, that your life may be long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Honour does involve respect, which is how it is usually interpreted these days, but in the original language it refers primarily to financial support, and suggests earned income. What it says is that, if you as a society, do not see that the elderly who can no longer do productive work, do not look after them, (Cont below)

So that they can live out their days to the fullest extent possible to them in the best health they can, then you will never be a nation of long living people. The implication also is that God says that the elderly have earned the right to this care by the work they did during their productive years. First responsibility he places fairly and squarely on the shoulders of the children of those elders. And, let's face it, the elderly need their children and grandchildren love them above all else

      Not gonna happen.
Even though medicines and treatments have advanced, greatly improving the quality of life even for our seniors, his universal plan will set us back.

For example: 3 of my grandparents lived into their 90's, and my grandmother was 88 (Pap is 94 and still going strong), and my other grandfather still had all his faculties at 97, carried his cane in case he neede to straighten someone out, and still liked his Skyline Coneys and beer (but since Gram died he gave up on life and went quickly). With Obama's plan, if someone is diagnosed (or worse, misdiagnosed) with congestive heart failure, they're supposed to accept that they're getting old and their health will deteriorate, dope them up and try to get comfy 'til they die, instead of trying to correct their health.

In addition, if we are to carry private insurance (which in theory would save the gov't money) he wants to penalize us with a thousand dollar fine...?! In the meantime, we'll keep providing free health benefits to illegals and paying for abortions in other countries when we could be housing and feeding our own homeless and properly caring for our elderly and infirm.

In the medical game, it will all depend on who you are on the roster as to whether or not you're placed in the line-up: They'll pick and choose who gets what treatment based on age, stature, and the probability of what you may be able to contribute to society in your future.

If he would offer US the same health plan that HE and congress are entitled to, find a way to control frivolous malpractice suits, and minister to our citizens before endowing the illegals, not only would I live with it, I'd demonstrate in public my support of sending our tax dollars to cover its costs.

Great answer! I heard on TV about a place called something like Junction Ford in Colorado, which is a smallish town of about 55,000 persons. They have greatly reduced their health care bill by proactively watching over their elderly and chronically sick and disabled to prevent them needing hospitalization in the first place, and also ensuring that when people are discharged from hospital they do not need to come back because they were not really better or because they were returned (Continued

To a situation without adequate support. Wherever possible problems are treated early to prevent them going any further than the doctor's office, which is far cheaper than hospitalization when the condition has been allowed to progress too far. By following these policies they have reduced their costs by at least a third. Best of all, they have a mix of privately insured, Medicare and Medicaid patients, and THEY TREAT THEM ALL EQUALLY!!!!

        Nope.
He will come up with a plan we have to live with. It will put us so far in debt and reduce public health to such a low level as to make our present situation seem like the good old days.

He already has a plan but actually living with it  i don't think so. You will either be able to afford individual care under your own private insurance or you will be waiting for days for health care under this plan. I have watched the shows on the health care plan as they have it now and most people do not even go to the doctor because they can not receive any real medical treatment. They can not even get a pair of glasses that are prescribed so they can see to do a job. I would like to see it all rainbows and lollipops but it is more like looking through mud.he is talking about doing away with all the paperwork that most of us can not even understand in the first place just to receive treatment which sounds a lot like taking one more step to full governmental control of just one more aspect of your lives...it sounds a little too much like the anti christ and not being able to buy or sell without having a chip embedded in your hand or head...(you think i am paranoid but i think it is a obvious step in order to do away with a paper or information trail).i can just see the chaos coming when all the records are only in the computer and they can't retrieve them from the memory or back up files. Besides i don't like to think about what i can not change.i am even seeing doctors taking extra monies for what they call  preferred plans.in other words they are leaving regular practices and starting up what i like to call a boutique clinic where they only take care of their rich clients/or how should i say this feeding off the rich while leaving the average working class people out in the cold looking for treatment..i guess doctors are no longer going to honor their oath and the reason they got into medicine in the first place. I better quit now before i say something i will really regret.

I appreciate your observation about the dangers of having no paper trail. As a society we are becoming far too dependant on computers and electronics for our own good. One good solar flare can wipe out a whole network. At the very least transcontinental back-up is required for safety. But there again, many paper records were wiped out in bombing raids during World War II. So nothing is 100% safe.

Felicity_x:- i think a lot of people are seeing the disadvantages of both set ups. Paper and computers. There is just to much red tape in both processes. It use to be everyone could get a fair wage for a days work in order to pay outright for medical treatments now even if you work your whole life one operation can wipe you out even with insurance. Something is amiss with the whole set up from the insurance to the medical field and hospitals, medicines, treatments.

I hope Obama can make health care more equitable.  I've always struggled to see how a country as rich and prosperous as the US can allow millions of its citizens to struggle with chronic ill health.  Here in the UK, people 'complain' about the NHS (National Health Service), but if it was removed or means-tested there would be uproar.

Good health, to me, is much more of a right than a privilege in a civilised society.

The main problem is goverment messing with it. If the private sector was alloed to handle it without the goverment screwing with it it would have never became a problem to begin with.

No, we are all different, and we all have different illness, there isn't any one plan that will say that each and every illness imaginable will be covered. Just isn't going to happen.

What blows my mind is the medical prefession, hospitals, doctors, insurance companies saying they wiil porvide health care as long as they believe they will get paid and then turning around and refusing to offer care to a dying cancer patient or kicking someone to the curb literally after operating on them when they find they are homeless. Bunch of savages(talking about the health care industry) just though of something(duh !) medicine/healthcare is now a industry .

No, the biggest flaw I personally see is the taxation of business owners who gross 350,000. Or more to create this "stockpile". Notice the word "Gross". I truly believe that if the american people voted to take away the insurance, lifetime salary, and the such from our supposed officials and force them to get to pay for their own insurance, medical, dental and 401 ks, we would have plenty of funds to take care of those  in low or middle income families with no insurance. Oh yeah, and the outrageous salaries. 86,000.00 per county board member in one of my counties. They only work part-time. 20-25 hrs per week. Gee, how much could we save there?

I tried to give a whole lot of thumbs up... But as usual it wont let me. Theres really nothing I can say that has not already been said. I agree that whatever Obama comes up with cant possibly work for everyone. As Tig said... We're all different, with different health concerns... No blanket can cover us all adaquately. And as for fining us for NOT having private insurance.... What makes him think we can pay a fine if we cant already afford private insurance?  Awesome answers... And interesting reading.

That's a tough question. So far, I would have to say no because his goals are still too self-centered. Could a Health Plan eventually be created that we can all live with? I believe that could happen, but not until someone sees past the end of their nose and actually really cares about this once great country.

Honestly, I feel that Barack Obama will come up with something but I don't feel that it's going to be for the best benefit of the people.  However, he is faced with too many immediate needs of the world and is having to fix a great deal of problems that most newly elected President's normally do not encounter.  Barack Obama has fantastic ideas, concepts and values when it comes to the true benefit of the people, by the people, and for the people; but due to the unfortunate financial crash that he has inherited his overall focuses may not be for the best for the people due to the type of planning that has gone into this particular area of the world for all of us.  So in short, we probably won't be able to live with it when it does happen; but I do feel that he will do his best to make changes to whatever he finds that is not working the best for us all. God bless Barack Obama because personally he walked into a mess of the world from the beginning due to the errors of so many previously reigning President's ... So with that being said, I respect the man for all that he is trying to do when having to bare the burdens from others that he had nothing to do with at all.

Enough Bush-bashing already. HE inherited Clinton's mess, & after the economy plunged following 9/11, it rebounded stronger than before until 2-1/2 yrs ago when Pelosi & the Dems took over. There's ALOT I didn't care for about GW, but so far our new messiah has already demonstrated that illegals have priorities over citizens (Don't agree? Sit in an emergency room admissions office & watch), & appropriated our money for killing babies in other countries insted of helping the infirm in our own

Sure, if you don't mind paying for it for the next 100 years. And it's FULL of pork barrel riders. Like 1.3 BILLION designated for bike trails and hiking trails. And if he protests these riders ( there are DOZENS of them), his proposal will stall and never get passed. Disgusting washington politics as usual.

And he has even said in one of his speech's this how will I go down in History. He cares about what the future think and every time a president has done that they have always turned out to be a bad president. I think if Obama is not careful he could go down as one of the worst presidents in history.
