What Is Life Drawing?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Life drawing refers to the study through drawing of the human body. The models in life drawing classes are usually nude, because this helps artists to see a clear structure of the body.

Back in Victorian times, life drawing wasn't considered a lady-like activitiy so must art schools didn't let women in. The few schools that did allow women usually used strategically placed cloths on the models!

Often in life drawing classes, students use charcoal as a medium.  It is easy to manipulate and erase charcoal. Therefore, it is effective for quickly capturing the lines and movement of the body. Also, by using only the black of the charcoal and the white of the paper, artists are able to concentrate on the form.

The models in life drawing classes are all ages, shapes and sizes - much to the appreciation of the artist's eye, which loves variety!
