3G is a phrase that refers to the concept of third-generation technology regarding mobile phone standards. 3G provides the capability to transfer voice data and non-voice data simultaneously. This non-voice data includes things such as obtaining information, sending and receiving email, and instant messaging. The idea that 3G networks are just upgrades of 2G networks is invalid. 3G networks do not operate on the same frequency spectrum as 2G networks. New networks need to be built to support 3G devices. 3G is a wide area network that has come to incorporate high-speed internet access and video telephony to these networks. These devices also have capabilities of downloading and playing music. The continued development of this technology will lead to the capability of handling many common tasks and services that have in the past been restricted to local networks, if available at all, to be bundled in mobile phones and various other similar technology.
