Copernicus and Galileo had discovered that the sun was the centre of the known universe, whereas the church had claimed that God had placed the earth at the centre of the cosmos. The discoveries of Newton also put doubts in the minds of educated people about whether the church did hold a monopoly of truth. He offered mathematical explanations of why planets orbited the sun and also suggested that the whole scientific world could be explained by fundamental laws of nature.

Other people, most of whom were believers in God trying to find out how His universe worked, created and developed several new sciences including Biology and Geology, which, furthermore, were said to contradict the Church's teachings. Europe was entering into an age of reason, causing the educated minority to search for scientific laws as opposed to relying on faith and tradition alone to explain the workings of the universe.
