Answer Question

Ernest Shackleton was a famous Irish explorer who was one of the first persons to explore the continent of Antarctica; he was part of several expeditions to Antarctica like the Discovery Expedition (1901-02), Nimrod Expedition (1907-09) and Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-16).

The British Antarctic Expedition or Nimrod Expedition so named after the ship in which the men sailed was led by Shackleton and under taken with a view to study the geology of the continent and to attempt to reach the South Pole. The expedition included famous personalities like explorer Frank Wild and noted geologist Edgeworth David; the major achievements of the expedition were the scaling of Mount Erebus the southernmost active volcano on Earth and the location of the South Magnetic Pole.

However the expedition was unable to achieve their main objective of attaining the South Pole due to weather conditions as well as lack of supplies; unlike most expeditions of the day which used dog sleds the Nimrod Expedition used ponies for locomotion.
