In large, first-year courses at most North American universities, teaching assistants (TAs) are responsible for grading all written assignments. Some universities will have a policy whereby professors must grade the final exam, while other schools will leave this to the discretion of the individual professor.

In the arts, humanities and sciences it is, however, to be expected that teaching assistants will be doing most of the grading for a given course. Classes with over 100 students will often have at least two TAs. The professor will usually explain to the assistants how he/she expects them to grade a given assignment and will sometimes provide an answer key as well. Grading, however, can be a much more subjective process when it comes to essays or short answers.

Students do, however, have some options if they are not satisfied with their grade. They are usually first asked to visit the TA during their office hours to resolve the problem. If the student is not satisfied, they can then visit the course's professor who will review the grade.
