How Is Debate An Advocacy?

I would like to relate debate to advocacy but I do not know how.

    A debate starts with a statement or premise.  Then there are arguments (not conflicts or fights) with one group "pro", or for, and another "con", or against, the statement.  Each side is supposed to back up their stand and try to convince observers that their stance has the most merit to it.  Each side is advocating their particular stance.

      I think debate is kind of advocacy, through debating, you advocate your own opinion and try to persuad others to have same belief with you.

      According to wikipedia, debate  is" a formal method of interactive and position representational argument", hope it helps.
