Cruising down the Nile in one of the many cruise ships is a fantastic experience. Tourism is a major industry in modern Egypt and there are hundreds of cruise ships, fitted out like luxury hotels.
Many different travel companies offer holidays on the Nile, usually last a week. The itineraries vary but the cruise ship usually docks in Luxor at the start of the trip. Excursions are arranged to the local temples at Luxor and Karnak and the riverside museum houses many of the treasures collected from local tombs.
Trips are also available to the Valley of the Kings, the ancient site where many of the pharaohs are buried.
The cruise ship provides accommodation, meals and drinks and often has a small swimming pool on the top deck, with sunbeds and activities such as table tennis.
As the ship sails down the Nile towards Aswan, several more excursions can be made to see ancient sites and modern sites such as the Aswan Dam. It is also a good opportunity to see how ordinary people live along the Nile. They farm and live in small holdings, a way of life that has not changed for thousands of years.
