The region which means "land between the rivers" is Mesopotamia. In the Greek language "mesos" means middle and "potamos" translates to river, hence the word Mesopotamia was derived. Situated in the fertile basin between the rivers Tigris and Euphrates the Mesopotaminian civilization developed simultaneously with the Egyptian civilization. Regarded as one of the oldest civilizations in the world the writings from Mesopotamia are among the earliest known to us. Hence Mesopotamia is also called the "Cradle Civilization". Another very interesting aspect of this civilization is that it is said that this is the place where the Garden of Eden was situated.
Located in South West Asia where much of the land is too dry for agriculture, Mesopotamia was a rich food growing area and is often referred to as the 'Fertile Crescent". That alone may have been the reason why Mesopotamia was conquered and inhabited by many other civilizations like the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians and the Assyrians.
