    It depends what the codes are in your area, and most likely you can't according to code.

    Aside from that, yes, you can hook up with flexible connections, but keep in mind 2 things:

    1) a flexible connection is not as strong as a fixed one, so there is the possibility of failure in the future. Most floods in basements occur when either the sump pump fails or a flexible hose to a washing machine fails.

    2) IF it is not up to code when you go to sell your house, you will have to have the hot water heater hard piped before you sell your house, because most new buyers will have the home inspected, and that will definitely come up on any inspection report.
