Who Is The Prime Minister Of Lithuania At Present?

    Lithuania is a Baltic country situated in North-eastern Europe; the country since achieving independence on March 11, 1990 and opted for a semi-presidential democratic parliament system. In this system the President is the head of the state elected directly for a period of five years and also appoints the Prime Minister who is the head of the executive body of the government, according to the advice of the Lithuanian parliament the Seimas.

    The incumbent Prime Minister is Gediminas Kirkilas appointed on July 4, 2006 by President Valdas Adamkus. He succeeded Zigmantas Balcytis as the Prime Minister when the latter failed to muster the requisite support from the Parliament which Kirkilas later achieved on July 4, 2006.

    The Prime Minister was elected to the Seimas as a member of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania; he first became Defense Minister in the cabinet of 2004 a post which he still holds. Gediminas Kirkilas in his student days graduated in Political Science; he also received an MBA degree from the International Business School located in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.
