In simple words a descriptive essay is one in which the writer describes something in the form of an essay. In other words he or she writes what a thing or person is like for example if the topic for a descriptive essay is 'Describe a penguin' you can start off by describing where it lives. Describe its body and then what it eats and its general characteristics. You can end the essay by giving the summary about the penguin. The important part is that while writing a descriptive essay you make sure that you make an impact on the reader through your essay. To make your essay interesting write about your senses or the senses of the person you are writing about i.e. His/her feeling at that time, what he/she heard or saw etc. Furthermore you should describe things not tell them for example if you have to say 'I was hungry' it would be better to say 'I had a growling sensation in my stomach'.
