Can I Use 142A Instead Of Regular Freon In The Air Conditioning System?
I have a 1986 Oldsmobile with a warm air conditioner and wanting to know if putting 142A would solve the problem or does the system have tube vacated?

Yes, but you will need to change out the mineral oil to a poly-ester based. Your system my be new enough that it has the synthetic oil in it already. Check with the manufacture. If in fact you have mineral oil based oil you MUST change it out. However there is a product made by Dupont called "HotShot" which is a 'drop-in' replacement and required no oil change and delivers about 95% efficiency.

There is NO drop in replacement for any freon. That is the law (EPA) if you vehicle has R-12 in it you can continue to use it but it is expensive and you have to be 609 certified to use it. They do not make it anymore but you can buy it. And as I said you must be certified to purchase it. You can switch to 134-A which you can purchase, but you have to change the oil in your system and the connections etc. If your system is 134-A then have someone check it Do not try this if you have never done this before, it has to be done right and you cannot vent any refrigerant into the air, and it can be dangerous for you.
