Founded by Bob Young, Lulu.com in 2002 as a way for independent publishers to publish their work, which could not, for whatever reason, be published by a mainstream publishing company. The innovative idea is that anyone who wishes to publish a book, CD, or a calendar, to do so at no cost whatsoever.
The author retains the full copyright in the work, and because they work on a POD (print on demand) basis, you only pay for the copies that you actually buy. However, although publishing with Lulu.com is a cheap and economical way of getting your book or music published, it is only a publishing tool and they do not publicize customers' books and it is up to you to market and sell it.
Lulu.com don't deny that they publish a lot of rubbish, but there are some authors who have been successful with the marketing of their books, music or calendars and for some, it's just the joy of having their name in print that is enough for them.
