Why Do Kids Have Loads Of Math?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

"Educators" believe that lots of practice with math will help kids learn to be proficient at problem solving. In my opinion, they are only partly right.

Once you know 6+9=15, you don't need to keep repeating it to know it "better." If you work a series of problems giving answers such as 6+9=14, you have not learned anything--and have probably taken a step backward in your math education.

Exposure to a variety of problems that draw on (or reinforce) pattern recognition skills, or that give you an "aha moment" with respect to some concept or another, is a good idea.
