The Council House of Birmingham was built in 1874, when the foundation was laid by Joseph Chamberlain. The completion of the building took place in 1879, costing about £163, 000. Three optional names were given for the building

The Municipal Hall, Council House or Guildhall, but finally the Council Hall was selected. It has its location at the prime area of Victoria Square. The House was designed by Yeoville Thomason, who was a very established designer and architecture. The archway of the building has been designed very intricately. There is an open space at Victoria Square which has water flowing down the steps.

The Council House was extended in the year 1881 for accommodating more offices. At the time of Edward's coronation it was illuminated along with the Town Hall.
