The Eiffel Tower is an iron structure located in Paris, France and designed by Gustave Eiffel, a French engineer. The tower built in the period 1887-1889 near the Seine river is one of the most famous man made monuments and a well known tourist destination. The tower was built as an entrance to a World Fair organized to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution.
The tower stands 300 meters (1000 ft) high; it was the tallest structure in the world when it was completed in 1889 a record which it held until 1930 when the Chrysler Building (319 m, 1063 ft) in New York City, United States was completed. The total weight of the Eiffel Tower is surmised to be about 10,100 tons. The tower is mainly used for FM radio transmission and television. The tower also houses two restaurants located on the first and second floor.
