A lot of people think that the days of letter-writing are over but whether you correspond by email or snail mail, letters are a wonderful way to communicate. Sharing your daily life is great but there's a lot of other material you can share as well. Let yourself go and don't be afraid of how the other person will react. Writing is a very personal medium and whether you're writing for just yourself, for one other person or millions of readers, the only truth to be found through it is achieved by getting out of your own way, not being self-critical and lacking in confidence. Talk about your feelings, dreams, ideas, plans - you'll never run out of material. The best way to communicate is to be honest and to be interested in the listener. Ask about their life, their interests and thoughts. It's not about punctuation and spelling. Practice makes perfect. You could use your penpal experience to improve your writing, of course but ultimately letters are about love and sharing. Love can travel across a page and across the world. First of all, get into the habit of keeping a daily diary, of the things you do and places you go. These are details that if you are not good at remembering things, you probably have a hard time recalling when you write an e mail.
Jot down 5 to 10 points a day, then when you send that weekly or monthly e mail, you can look back and remember all the good times you have had. Or alternatively, the terrible week you have just gone through. Either way, these are the things that friends want to know, although the rest of the world may find them boring.
