Brice is probably a Gaulish name (from one of the Celtic tribes who eventually formed the French nation.) It may derive from an old Celtic word meaning "speckled," though this is not certain. Brice can also be found in Latin forms: Britius and Bricius.

The name was well known to early Chrisians because of the fame of St Brice of Touraine in France (370-444.) A pupil and follower of St Martin of Tours, Brice became famous for having been a difficult youth, who later repented and devoted his life to good works.

The name was rare until recently, but like many Celtic names is now enjoying a revival.
