Black mamba is the longest poisonous snake in the world, second only to king-cobra. It is believed to be one of Africa's most feared snakes. Unarguably, it is the world's fastest snake with a speed of 23 kilometres per hour. Black mamba is not black in colour; it is greyish-brown. However black mambas are not as ferociously violent as people make them out to be. If you tame them or keep them in cavity, they are surprisingly docile.
Black mamba is a part of the genus 'Dendroaspis' (tree-snake). The snake is about 2.5 to 3 meters long. Black mambas live on warm-blooded prey like rodents, ground squirrels, and other little mammals. The venom of this snake is quite deadly and is absorbed rapidly by the prey. The snakebite to humans is a rare thing to happen but if bitten, can be life-threatening. Timely first-aid and anti-venom administration can help reverse the symptoms.
