Does Higher MP For Still Photos "Make Up" For Lack Of Optical Zoom?

I am narrowing down options regarding the purchase of a digital camcorder that also takes still photos. In order to keep price down, it seems optical zoom is a feature that I may have to sacrifice. However, a high megapixel resolution is still a nice feature. Despite the lack of optical zoom, shouldn't I be able to crop the photos while editing without losing significant resolution because of the higher megapixels available when taking the original photo? Thanks for any input!

I have found that enlarging photos with large mega pixels allow for a very good enlarged photo. The detail is crisp the more the mega pixels. You will find that it does help to have more mega pixels! Weather it satisfies your needs or not really will be effected by how you intend to use it. I have superseded many zoom issues with x-view software available free on line. It allows good zoom, sizing and cropping abilities for free.
