What does 'hardscrabble' mean?
I'm sure it's nothing to do with the board game Scrabble - can anyone help?

That is correct - this is a red herring word. It is an adjective that means you get little for a lot of effort.
It is most often used to describe land where you are barely able to scrape a living, despite all your hard work.
