Is The Nobel Prize Awarded In The Field Of Mathematics?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Nobel Prize is awarded in the domains of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology and Medicine, Literature, Peace and Economic Science. The prizes are awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Karolinska Institutet (Physiology and Medicine), Swedish Academy (Literature) and Norwegian Nobel Committee (Peace).

The awards were instituted on the basis of the will of Alfred Nobel the inventor of dynamite in 1895 who bequeathed $ 9,000,000 for the establishment of the foundation to award the prizes. The awards were awarded mainly for practical inventions or research that led to developments of a practical nature that benefited mankind in some way.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to individuals for their efforts in promoting world peace or for humanitarian work while the prizes for literature and economics are awarded for the contributions of the individual to the field. Mathematics though is not considered as a separate field and hence theoretical research in the domain is not considered for a Nobel Prize.
