The Anglican Church in the United States is effectively called the Episcopal Church and members are, in theory, meant to adhere to the same doctrines as Anglicans in Britain, Canada and elsewhere in the world.

Like the Church of England, the Episcopal Church permits the ordination of women, as well as non-celibate men as priests. Nevertheless, the consecration of Gene Robinson, an openly gay man, as the Episcopal bishop of New Hampshire has caused major tension within the Anglican Communion and has led some conservative Anglican bishops in Africa to call for the suspension of the Episcopalians from the worldwide Anglican Church.

A defining feature of the Episcopal Church is its relatively liberal political and social views on issues such as homosexuality, affirmative action, anti-racism, capital punishment, as well as in terms of social justice themes, such as affordable housing and the rights of workers.

Earlier in 2006, the Episcopal Church was given an ultimatum by the worldwide Anglican Church to either fall in line with its teachings on issues such as homosexuality and same-sex marriage, or face permanent expulsion from the worldwide communion.
