American writer Frank Herbert was born on 8th October 1920. The critically acclaimed author wrote scinece fiction works, and enjoyed significant commercial success.
Dune, which was published in 1965 is his best known work. There were five other novels that followed as a series. The Dune saga, which is widely recognized as a classic of the science fiction genre, dealt with themes like human survival and evolution, and the relationships of religion, politics, and power.
His novels explored and dealt with diverse subjects ranging from religion and philosophy to politics and psychology. His fascination with the mysteries of human survival and evolution shaped the underlying tone in most of his works.
Before the release of Dune, it was often pointed out that for a science fiction novel to be successful, all it needed was a great technological idea. Characterization and great story were secondary. For this reason Dune stood out and is so significant to the genre. Herbert deliberately suppressed technology so that instead of addressing and dealing with the future of man made technology he could deal with the future of man.
