The recent rulings that the United States Supreme Court has given regarding patents is sure to have an adverse impact in several industries, two main ones of which, are the pharmaceutical and the technology industry. All in all, there were two rulings given by the Supreme Court that set new benchmarks regarding the challenges to patents. This was done in the attempt to preclude litigation from the so-called 'patent trolls'. Patent trolls are those firms whose existence is exclusively dependent upon extracting royalty payments. In the aftermath of these new rulings given by the Supreme Court, the opinion of legal analysts also comes forward, which states that the nature of the rulings are ambivalent in the sense that on one hand, they will put a constraint on the 'junk patent' lawsuits that have acutely leveraged the high-tech industry while on the other hand, these rulings have a tendency of hurting patent protection rights for sectors like the pharmaceutical industry.
