The need for cosmetic surgery was first felt during the early years of the 20th century, during the second decade of that century, specifically. The event was surprisingly the First World War, not something that you would immediately associate with a science that specializes in giving the finishing touches to the perfect face. The First World War was the first time there was such large-scale and worldwide maiming and disfigurement of the human body.
The use of advanced arsenal in those times meant severe and serious burns and injuries. There were large numbers of disfigurements to the face and limbs of the soldiers. And there was not much by way of remedial surgery in those times. Correcting those disfigurements required highly skilled surgical work and advanced equipment, things which were not there in those times.
The absence of these materials and technology provided the key fillip for experimentation. Surgeons across America and the world began trying out newer methods to help correct the disfigurements. Newer methods and the experimentation led to newer technologies, and thus, cosmetic surgery developed into a full-fledged science.
