There are several reasons why cell phones are asked to be switched off in a flight. The most commonly given reason is that cell phones would interfere with the navigational equipment of the aircraft but up till now there have been no cases recorded where cell phones have caused disturbances in the working of the instruments.

Another cause could be related to security concerns and to minimize the chances of the aircraft being hijacked. In most cases passengers have also complained about the nuisance value of fellow passengers talking on the phone continuously.

However above a certain altitude cell phones are out of range in most cases and hence one can neither receive nor make any calls in this period. In flights of certain airlines it is allowed to use only the phones that are made available to the passengers by the airline and is being viewed as an unfair practice to increase revenues.
