Where Is Kielder Forest?

Kielder Forest is the largest forest in the United Kingdom. It is located in the county of Northumberland in England. It covers a total area of about 50, 000 hectares. There is a large reservoir at the heart of Kielder Forest. The reservoir is known as Kielder Water. The ownership and management of Kielder Forest is the responsibility of the United Kingdom Forestry Commission.

Before the 1920's, Kielder Forest had several hectares of land, most of which was covered by open moorland. The place had native woods in the upland along the sides of streams and isolated areas that mainly comprised craggy rocks. The moorland was the ideal place for poachers to hunt grouse and shepherds to graze their sheep. The Duke of Northumberland built a lodge on the edge of Kielder Village in the 18th century. This lodge, known as Kielder Castle, is now open to tourists and is an information centre. Kielder Village is located at the head of Tyne Valley.
