An underutilization of iodine in a person's diet leads to some harmful physical consequences. Be it any age group or any other category of people, iodine is immensely necessary to ensure a proper and normal physical growth. For women who are pregnant, a lack of iodine in their diets would not only affect them but also the unborn baby, causing conditions like neurological cretinism, myxodema, cretinism, psycho motor defects and sometimes even more severe cases like abortion, stillbirths and congenital abnormalities. As for children and adolescents, iodine paucity could contribute towards goitre and all its resulting complications, hypothyroidism, a loss of energy, impairment of mental function, decline in the intelligent quotient (IQ) as well as retarded mental and physical development. In the case of adults, refraining from iodine could lead to consequences like goitre (a swelling at the bottom of the throat), hypothyroidism, impairment of mental functions and lastly a reduced sense of socio-economic perspicacity.
